F1 is Starting with a Bang!

The 2021 F1 season is highly anticipated and has finally been given the go-ahead by the FIA with the first race set to take place in Bahrain. However, this week it has been confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will race for a ninth season with Mercedes. Hamilton became F1’s most successful driver in 2020, breaking Schumacher’s all-time win record and matching his 7 World Championships. ‘’Our team has achieved incredible things together’’ said Hamilton. Part of the new deal included a commitment from Mercedes that they would continue to work with Hamilton on achieving “greater diversity and inclusion in Motorsport’’.

Lewis Hamilton signed the one-year deal with Mercedes with the hope of breaking the record of World Championships won by one person. Hamilton’s defence of his current title begins on the 28^th of March in Bahrain, and if he is successful and wins the 5^th World Championship in a row, he will surpass the record of 7 that he currently shares with Michal Schumacher. Mercedes have won the constructors’ championship 7 times in a row and the drivers’ world title has gone to a Mercedes driver for 7 seasons straight, with Hamilton winning 6.
Mercedes CEO and Team Principal Toto Wolff said in a statement ‘’The story of Mercedes and Lewis has written itself into the history books of our sport over the past eight seasons, and we are hungry to compete and to add more chapters to it’’. He then goes onto say, “We are totally in line – Lewis and me and the wider group in Mercedes – about the situation, so there was never a discrepancy in opinion”.
