Formula 1 Returns with An Epic Showdown

29 March 2021

Sunday, March 28th saw the return of Formula 1 with driver’s taking to the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix track, and it wasn’t without controversy. When you heard the words “I’ve got no rear” coming from the cockpit, you know it’s going to end badly. But, in true Lewis Hamilton style, he saw off the competition to secure victory over Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen.

Better performance from Max

Leading up to the race, Max Verstappen’s car was showing to be the better of all those on the track and many of the pundits had declared it was Max Verstappen’s race to lose, and he did just that, even with a pole lead of four-tenths. By lap 13, Hamilton bolted into the pit lane to change his tyres, a move nobody had predicted. Four laps later Verstappen followed suit. Lap 29 Hamilton opted for another change of tyres, and this led to the Red Bull driver relaxing in his attempts to win.

Excitement Ensues

Lap 39, Verstappen pitted and managed to close the gap on Hamilton on exiting. It didn’t help when the British racing champion hit the brakes a little too hard on turn 10, running wide and allowing his rival Verstappen to shoot past with his DRS capability. However, his victory was short-lived when in turn 4 he ran off the track and because no part of his tyre was touching the outside kerb, he was instructed to hand the place back to Hamilton or be penalised. Verstappen was hoping to pull off into the lead by 5-seconds and receive a 5-second penalty instead of handing the spot back, but he was told to do differently by his team.

As Grand Prix openers go, it was thrilling and probably one of the best we’ve ever witnessed, but can Hamilton secure victory in the Pirelli Gran Premio in Italy on April 18th?
